The first step in finding a martial arts school is to ascertain the cause, reason or the objective of learning a martial art. Why do you want to learn martial arts? Are you interested in tournament forms or self-defense? Do you want to become a black belt or to attend classes simply for the exercise?

After ascertaining your goals, it is time to choose the martial art you want to learn. Do you have a particular martial art in mind that you wish to learn? Some martial arts are focused on achieving physical fitness, some are meant primarily for self-defense while some are good as a sport and tournament forms. Once you have decided on the martial art style you wish to pursue, then comes the all important step of finding the right martial arts school for yourself.

Do you have a friend who can recommend a good martial arts school. If not, check your telephone directory to see what kinds of schools are listed within a reasonable distance. Location of your training place is important, try to find a school situated not far from your home, otherwise sooner or later you will be tired of a long travel times to and from classes and thus will decide to stop your education. Phone the schools and ask whether they're affiliated with a larger organization. If not, standards and methods for advancement may be inconsistent.

Go for a demo class or a couple of classes. Even schools who don't advertise a free lesson will usually give you one if you request it, or at least offer a low cost, very short term introductory program. Ask for permission to talk with students and instructors. Find out how students' experiences have been with the school and whether the instructors' styles will support your goals. Find out about the qualifications of the teachers and instructors. Assess their quality of teaching. Check out whether the school ensures a safe practice environment, or are students allowed to train in dangerous ways or without proper supervision? Also check whether the school promotes hygiene and free from unsafe conditions If you are happy with the things so far, it is time to work out the finances.

Find out the total costs of the learning program and not just the tuition expenses. There may be an extra fee or a registration fee. Expenses may also be involved in buying the specific uniform and shoes for the martial arts training program.

Once you have checked out all the aspects, you are ready to join. Remember that choosing the right teacher and the right school is more important than the actual style. If you choose a school that you enjoy, study with a teacher you like, and train with students that inspire you, you are likely to stick with your martial art. The longer you stick with it, the better you’ll get. Maintain a discipline to get to your goal of becoming a martial art practitioner.
